I won Big 4 tickets this morning on 93.3 KDKB! I have been trying all last week during Mandatory Metallica, trying to decipher backwards Metallica songs, couldn’t get through. But on day #1 of the morning show with Sludge, I won!!! I am in shock! THANK YOU KDKB!!!

I do realize this is a Northern Arizona blog. I do. But being this is a Northern Arizona publication, we have to collectively admit that record store shopping in the Northland is limited to the…

I didn’t know Dallas Taylor was even still alive… He was the original drummer for Crosby Stills and Nash, CSNY and was also the drummer for Stills band Manasas, and now he’s an interventionist!

I didn”t know Phil Spector produced 2 songs for Starsailor’s ‘03 album “Silence is Easy”. Which two songs? They fired him before the album was done due to his mood swings and creative differences. I really like Starsailor and of course Phil Spector is a GENIUS, albeit a very weird & eccentric Genius. But he hadn’t produced an album in some 23 years or something. That says something about Starsailor.
So this month my oldest daughter Renee turned 22. That makes me feel old… but then we were talking about Micah, my oldest grandson, being only 4 years old, and to try to help him grasp how old I am - I told him I am 4 - 10 times! (That’s 40 if you don’t want to do the math.) But, that makes me feel young! Yes, 40 is young… but then today I was told that one of my daughters friends whom just met me for the first time the other day, told Renee I had a big butt! Wow, I’ve never heard that; although I have often thought it myself… now it MUST be true!! On the other hand, she was also informed that I had big boobs (“nice to meet you, goodbye” hug). Well, we already knew that! HA!! Gotta have balance! PS.. My butt isn’t THAT big…
Anyway, this month I won tickets to see Kings of Leon, Built to Spill and the Features! This was not a radio promotion, it was a drop your name in a box contest at Buffalo Exchange, a recycled clothing store. We had been there shopping a few weeks earlier and to be honest I didn’t even know there was a contest or that I had been entered into it! So when I go the call, my initial thought was… “how did Buffalo Exchange get my name and phone number??” But when she said I had won, I was like “ALRIGHT!” LOL Turns out my boyfriend Otto had entered me into the contest while we were there shopping… It’s is just so funny, now I am winning from other people’s efforts - they know I have good luck.HAHAHA!
I was really excited to see Built to Spill with frontman and indie rock god Doug Martsch. And they were absolutely incredible! If you have never heard BTS - you’ve got to listen to them! The highlight of the show was the encore where they sang “Carry the Zero”. It was sweet and I have been a fan of these guys since around 1995 - 15 years! I finally got to see them live!!!
Kings of Leon put on a high energy show also, and I could tell that their fans are crazy about them. I have to say I haven’t come around as a fan just yet…
So, I will move on to mentioning The Features: they opened the show. Hailing from Nashville TN, their sound was indie-punk, and it was great. Actually Kings of Leon started a new record label “Imprint” along with Bug Music CEO John Rudolph, and The Features were the first act the new label signed. I see good things for them in the future. Check them out at http://www.thefeatures.com/
I had won Lady GaGa tickets a few months ago.. did I mention that? My aunt asked me to try to win, so I tried and I actually won… not that anyone was surprised… even though we were!!! My aunt Loretta wanted to buy the tickets from me for $100, but I refused, she had wanted them for her daughter Terry (my cousin) and the other for Renee, my daughter. I told Loretta, “You are one nice mom, Terry can have one of the tickets and I don’t want an money for them, but I am not giving up the other ticket, I am going!” And I do really want to go but like i said before, it is Renee’s 22nd birthday, and her and Terry are “besties”, and I know Renee really wants to go… so I told her to go pick up the tickets for me and she could have them so her and Terry can go together… HAPPY BIRTHDAY! BUT… turns out they were 3RD ROW! OMG, I would love to see Lady GaGa in the 3rd row. She is really awesome! Ever since I saw her perform with Elton John, I just have mucho respect for her, and what she is trying to do… Elton is LEGENDARY! And I know GaGa will put on one hell of a show! Have fun Renee and Terry!!
And finally, I just got back from seeing The Scorpions and Tesla Tuesday night at The Dodge Theater. This is supposed to be their last tour in support of their most recent album “Sting in the Tail” before they retire for good. I had to get tickets and I wasn’t going to chance it by waiting to try to win tickets… so I ended up purchasing a four-pack of club level seats, which was on special, like getting one for free. And I definitely wanted 3 tickets, for Otto and myself but also my best friend Holly, whom shares my love for The Scorpions! The Scorps were the soundtrack to all the good times we had back in the day! I knew she would want to be there so I gave her the two extra tickets for her birthday last month. She brought her nephew Corey and we all had a blast!!
Tesla opened the show… The two guitar players, Frank Hannon and Dave Rude were incredible!! I was very glad I brought my binoculars!! Dave was a Hottie!! He is thin with really long wavy brown hair and the way he played that guitar… OH MAN!!! Jeff Keith, the lead singer sounded totally recognizable, just a little rough, and I am sure, the way he was licking his lips and tensing up his free hand, I think he was on something… just my opinion. Can’t wait to see what else Dave Rude does in his career… He was really, really good!
The Scorpions came out and ROCKED US (like a hurricane). Rudolf Schenker, who by the way is 61, was wearing spandex and he was an animal onstage!!! Just absolutely rocking out onstage, running from one end to the other, doing the windmill on his signature Flying V guitar. Man, his performance must be quite a workout because he is RIPPED! Of course they played all the hits. I stood pretty much the entire show and screamed my head off. My throat is still soar 2 days later. I honestly don’t know why they are retiring, they look and sound AWESOME! The drummer, James Kottak is actually a Kentucky native, which I think is so cool, considering the band hails Germany. James has been with the band since 1996, and he fits in well. He has a punk look about him and had great energy! He had an awesome tattoo on his back in block letters reading ROCK AND ROLL FOREVER… Love it!!! One of the songs they did from their new album is called “The Best Is Yet To Come” and they really got the crowd into it with that one, which I hadn’t even heard. But it was so fitting for the farewell tour… not really saying goodbye, but moving on to bigger and better things. I was a little choked up when Klaus had us all singing along! Their encore was the best… they did Arizona, No One Like You and Rock You Like A Hurricane. It was AWESOME!!! We went out back after the show and waited with our albums and Sharpie hoping to get autographs! Frank Hannon of Tesla came over and signed Otto’s ticket. I really wasn’t prepared for any Tesla autographs, I was so focused on The Scorps… and a little while later Klaus Meine, their lead singer came over and signed autographs and merch. I got 2 albums signed: Fly to the Rainbow from 1974 and Savage Amusement 1988. After a few minutes he got back on the bus and they rolled out. As they drove away they were videoing the crowd from the bus window, and I swear one of the guys said “We’ll be back”… I HOPE SO!!! Thanks for the MEMORIES!!
It was a good July for concerts!
Guns N’ Roses
If I say I don’t need anyone
I can say these things to you
‘Cause
I can turn on any one
Just like I turned on you
I’ve got a tongue like a razor
A sweet switchblade knife
And I can do you favors
But then you’ll do whatever I like…
This is a great list!! Seems like VH1 may have put this list together, but I couldn’t find it’s English counter-part on Wikipedia.

I feel so humble with you tonight,
Just sitting in front of the fire.
See your face dancing in the flame,
Feel your mouth kissing me again,
What a beautiful buzz, what a beautiful buzz,
What a beautiful buzz, what a beautiful buzz.
Oh, what a beautiful buzz, what a beautiful buzz.
Yes, I am nitty gritty and my shirt’s all torn,
But I would love to spill the beans with you till dawn.
Give me little drink from your loving cup.
Just one drink and I’ll fall down drunk.
